Facebook recently launched 8 new social plugins that utilize Facebook’s new Open Graph Protocol and Graph API. In part 1 of this 3 part article I’ll go over the NEW Like Button and Like Box and how I think each can be used.
You have probably seen the Facebook Like button social plugin used on other websites already. Below is an example:
There’s a number of different ways you can setup this plugin. You can use replace “Like” with “Recommend” and you can choose to list your website visitor’s Facebook friends who liked the webpage, or you can just keep a totally of people who clicked Like/Recommend.
When someone clicks Like/Recommend, that person’s Facebook profile ‘Recent Activity’ is immediately updated (see example below) without leaving your website (unlike using the ubiquitous “Share of Facebook”, which is a 2 step process, click ‘Share’ then after modifying any text you want to add, click ‘Post’).
My thoughts on the Facebook Like Button Social Plugin
I am skeptical over how much traffic an entry in someone’s Facebook Profile Recent Activity is going to bring to your website. The Recent activity is physically very small compared with “Share of Facebook” especially when you’re sharing a Video orMP3, in which case the Video or MP3 is actually played directly in Facebook without having to come to your website. See below for an example on sharing Video using “Share on Facebook”, also see related article.
My advice would be to try the Facebook Like button on a couple of different pages on your website and determine if it provides any value to you.
The Facebook Like Box social plugin is a very convenient way for your website visitors to “Like” (formerly ‘become a fan’) your Facebook Fan page without leaving your website, and with just one click.
The Facebook Like Box social plugin can be configured to show ‘Streams’ (or basically your wall posts) if you wish, or not if you want to conserve webpage space. You can also choose whether or not to show the ‘Find us on Facebook‘ title, so if you want to use your own title, you can do so.
My thoughts on the Facebook Like Box Social Plugin
I think the Like Box is well worth adding to your website, specially your home page. The convenience of the single click to “Like” your Facebook Fan page is very compelling compared with the alternative of a “Find us on Facebook” link that takes your website visitor anyway from your website to your Facebook Fan Page where you hope the visitor will click “Like”.
There are some bloggers who claim it doesn’t appear to make a difference. If you have any thoughts on this, please comment below.
My advice would be to try the Facebook Like Box on your home page (or busiest landing page) and see if it increases your Facebook Fan Page ‘Likes’.
